Srinagar, June 7 (JKNS): Government College for Women (GCW), MA Road, Srinagar, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award for Green Campus and Sustainable Initiatives by the Climate Reality Project: India and South Asia in recognition of its outstanding contribution towards environmental conservation and sustainable campus development.
As per details available with news agency JKNS, Among other institutions recognised under the Green Campus initiative were Government Boys Model Higher Secondary School Shalimar, Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sonwar and Government Boys Higher Secondary School Kakapora.
The award recognises the college’s efforts in promoting eco-friendly practices, including air quality monitoring, solar energy utilisation, waste segregation and composting, rainwater harvesting, biodiversity conservation, enhancement of green cover, heritage clean-up campaigns and plantation drives.
The recognition reflects the institution’s sustained commitment to environmental stewardship through the active involvement of students, faculty members and staff in various sustainability programmes, college spokesperson said in a statement.
Principal Prof. Yasmeen Farooq described the achievement as a significant milestone for the institution and credited the collective efforts of the college community for making the award possible.
She said the honour would further encourage the institution to strengthen its environmental initiatives and continue working towards climate resilience and sustainable development.
The college also acknowledged the contribution of the Green Campus Accreditation Committee headed by Prof. Farooq. Special appreciation was extended to Asiya Nazir, Convener of the Eco Club and Head of the Department of Environmental Science, who served as Team Leader during the accreditation process, along with other committee members.
The announcement coincided with the conclusion of Environmental Week celebrations organised by the Eco Club in collaboration with NSS units under the theme “Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future.”
The week-long programme featured cleanliness drives, waste audits, environmental awareness campaigns, biodiversity competitions, renewable energy presentations and plantation activities aimed at promoting ecological consciousness among students.
The valedictory function held at the college’s Lalla Ded Auditorium was attended by Prof. Azra Nahid Kamili, Director and Head, Centre of Research for Development, University of Kashmir, and Aadil Bhat, Climate Reality Leader and Programme Officer, Climate Reality Project J&K. (JKNS)
