Srinagar, July 23 (JKNS): Even as the River Jhelum continues to witness a steady rise in water level due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of South Kashmir, officials on Thursday said there is no threat of floods, despite the possibility of the river touching the danger level.
An official told news agency JKNS that the recent heavy rainfall over the upper reaches naturally resulted in an increase in the river discharge, leading to a sustained rise in water levels at various monitoring stations.
“It was raining heavily in the upper catchment areas of South Kashmir, so it is obvious that the water level will continue to increase. It may even touch the danger level at some locations,” an official said.
However, official clarified that the current hydrological situation does not indicate any flood threat, adding that flood control authorities are closely monitoring the river round the clock.
Official expressed hope that with rainfall expected to subside gradually, the situation would stabilise and no flood-like scenario is anticipated.
Official also urged the public not to panic but advised people to avoid venturing close to rivers, streams and other water bodies as a precautionary measure with maintaining close Vigil. (JKNS)
