Srinagar, Aug 10 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday termed incidents of sexual crimes in Kashmir as “a shame” and called for the immediate arrest and severe punishment of those involved, while reacting to the recent rape case involving a 12-year-old girl in Bandipora.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar, as per news agency JKNS, said such incidents should not happen and those responsible must be apprehended without delay and punished severely.

“It is a shame. It should not happen. And where it happens, the culprits should be caught immediately and they should be punished severely,” the Chief Minister said.

He said the stringent laws enacted in the country following the Nirbhaya case should be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir as well.

“As we saw strict laws were implemented after nirbaya case, it must be annacted here in j&k too,” Cm omar said.

As earlier reported by JKNS, Bandipora Police had cracked the case involving the 12-year-old minor girl within 12 hours and arrested two accused persons during overnight raids.

Police had received information regarding the alleged rape of the minor at around 12 noon on Sunday, following which an investigation was initiated. The two accused, who were reportedly unknown to the victim, were subsequently arrested.

A case and FIR under relevant sections has been registered, while further investigation in the case is underway. (JKNS)
