Kya Hua Tera Wada?’: BJP’s Altaf Thakur Slams Omar Govt Over 6.83% Power Tariff Hike

Srinagar, Aug 23 (JKNS): BJP Jammu & Kashmir spokesman Altaf Thakur on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Omar Abdullah-led government over the 6.83 per cent electricity tariff hike, invoking the popular line “Kya Hua Tera Wada” to question the government over its electoral promise of providing 200 units of free power to households.

As per news agency JKNS, Quoting the popular line, “Kya hua tera wada, woh kasam, woh irada,” BJP Jammu & Kashmir spokesman Altaf Thakur on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the 6.83 per cent hike in electricity tariffs, questioning the government over its electoral promise of providing 200 units of free power.

Thakur said the tariff hike had come as a rude shock to ordinary households already struggling with rising prices of essential commodities, asking the Chief Minister how a poor family would manage higher electricity bills when the government had itself promised 200 units of free electricity.

“Kya hua tera wada, woh kasam, woh irada? The people of J&K have not forgotten the promises made to them. You promised 200 units of free electricity. Today, instead of giving relief to the people, your government is burdening them with a 6.83 per cent tariff hike. How can a poor family afford this?” Thakur asked.

He said the issue was not merely about an increase in electricity rates but about the credibility of the government and the promises made to people before coming to power.

“Where are the 12 gas cylinders? Where is the free ration? Where are the 200 free units of electricity? And what happened to the promise of one lakh jobs? The people deserve answers,” Thakur said.

The BJP spokesman said the government could not expect ordinary citizens to silently accept what he termed an “anti-people and anti-poor” decision.

“Families are already struggling to meet their monthly expenses. For a poor household, even a small increase in the electricity bill matters. At a time when the government should have been providing relief, it has chosen to increase the burden on consumers,” he said.

Thakur accused the Omar Abdullah-led government of making tall promises before elections and forgetting them after assuming power.

“Promises cannot be reduced to election slogans. If you promised 200 units of free electricity, you owe an explanation to every family that voted believing those words. The people of J&K are watching and they will hold the government accountable,” he said.

He warned that the BJP would not remain a silent spectator to what he called the government’s “anti-poor policies”.

“We will come to the roads. We will stand with the common people and fight this decision. The BJP will raise the voice of every household that is being forced to pay more. The government must roll back this hike and honour its commitment of 200 free units,” Thakur said.

Thakur said the government must choose between “relief for the people and revenue-driven policies that deepen their hardships”.

“The people did not vote for more burdens. They voted on promises of relief, employment and dignity. Omar Abdullah must now answer a simple question, what happened to your wada, your kasam and your irada?” he said. (JKNS)
