Budgam, August 29: On the occasion of National Sports Day, Indian National Congress In-Charge for the Budgam Assembly Constituency, Sameer Bhat, stressed the need for better sports opportunities and modern infrastructure for the younger generation, saying that the future of society depends on how effectively today’s youth are guided, supported, and provided with positive opportunities.
Addressing a function organised to mark the occasion, Bhat said it was encouraging to see children, girls, and young people participating enthusiastically in different sports. He noted that even children aged 10 and 11 are displaying exceptional talent, reflecting the enormous sporting potential that exists in Kashmir.
He said that although inter-school competitions and local tournaments are regularly organised, Kashmiri athletes are still unable to achieve representation at the state and national levels in proportion to their talent. According to him, the primary challenge is not a lack of ability but the absence of adequate sports infrastructure, modern facilities, and institutional support.
Bhat observed that talented athletes cannot realise their full potential without proper playgrounds, advanced training centres, experienced coaches, quality sports equipment, and other essential facilities. He added that Kashmir possesses remarkable talent in cricket, football, taekwondo, judo, and several other sports, which requires stronger government support and better opportunities to flourish.
He urged the government and the administration to modernise sports infrastructure, actively encourage local talent, and implement effective policies that enable young athletes to compete successfully at the national level.
Referring to major sporting events, Bhat said that while different parts of the country regularly host national-level competitions, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), such opportunities rarely come to Kashmir. He appealed for IPL matches and other national tournaments to be organised in the Valley so that local youth can witness top-level competition and gain greater exposure.
Expressing optimism, he said the concerned authorities, ministers, and sports organisations would seriously consider these demands, adding that with proper facilities and institutional backing, the youth of Kashmir have the potential to excel not only nationally but also internationally.
Bhat also made a strong appeal to young people to stay away from drugs and other social evils and instead dedicate their energy to sports and constructive activities. He said sports promote discipline, self-confidence, physical fitness, and a positive mindset, whereas drug abuse destroys health, careers, and the future.
He encouraged young athletes to work hard, learn from successful sportspersons, and strive to bring laurels to both Kashmir and the country.
