Why is Teachers’ Day(JKNS) celebrated in India specifically on September 5? The reason is that September 5 marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. He was also a teacher by profession and was regarded as a great and distinguished educator.
In 1962, when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India, some of his friends and students wanted to celebrate his birthday on September 5 in a grand manner. When teachers and students approached him with this request, Dr. Radhakrishnan said that instead of celebrating his birthday separately, he would feel proud and happy if the day were observed as Teachers’ Day in honour of all teachers across India.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan believed that the best and brightest minds of the country should become teachers, because teachers play a vital role in shaping society and giving the right direction and a strong foundation to the future of children.(JKNS)
