Srinagar, September 14, : The 2 Rashtriya Rifles (2 RR), Indian Army, inaugurated a cricket tournament at HMT, Srinagar, on Sunday as part of its continued efforts to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and meaningful engagement with the local community.
The tournament was inaugurated by Lt Col Aditya Chadha in the presence of officers of the Indian Army, political representatives, local residents, youth and other prominent members of the community. The participation of people from different sections of society added to the spirit of camaraderie and community partnership surrounding the event.
The initiative reflects the Indian Army’s continued emphasis on encouraging young people to take up sports and channel their energy towards healthy, constructive and productive activities. Through such initiatives, the Army aims to provide youth with opportunities to showcase their sporting talent while promoting values such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, perseverance and mutual respect.
The tournament has attracted participation from local cricket teams, providing players with a structured platform to compete and demonstrate their skills. According to the tournament schedule, the participating teams have been divided into Pool A and Pool B, with league matches scheduled from September 14 to September 16.
The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled to be played on September 17. The tournament will culminate with the grand final on September 18 at 10:00 am, when the finalists will compete for the championship title.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Tariq Son Construction appreciated the initiative and described it as a good step by the Indian Army to encourage sports and youth participation. He said that the Army has organised several such tournaments in the past, providing young people with opportunities to participate in sporting activities and showcase their talent.
He said that sports play an important role in keeping youth physically active and mentally engaged while developing discipline, teamwork and a sense of healthy competition. He appreciated the organisers for creating another platform for local players to compete and interact with one another.
The organisers said the tournament was not only aimed at promoting competitive cricket but also at creating a positive environment where young people could interact, participate and develop a spirit of healthy competition.
Beyond the sporting competition, the event also seeks to strengthen bonds between the security forces and the local population by providing a common platform for interaction and participation. Such initiatives allow people from different backgrounds to come together and share a common interest in sports.
Local residents and youth welcomed the initiative, saying that more sporting events and opportunities should be organised to encourage young people to remain involved in constructive activities. They said such tournaments can help identify emerging sporting talent and motivate young players to pursue sports with greater dedication.
