Kupwara : Chak Keegam Battalion organised a vibrant Gujjar & Bakarwal Mela at Chak Keegam today bringing together the local Gujjar and Bakarwal communities in a colourful celebration of their rich cultural heritage, traditional practices and community spirit.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local community, with members of the Gujjar and Bakarwal communities presenting captivating cultural programmes, showcasing their traditional songs, dances and folk traditions. The performances added colour and vibrancy to the mela while providing a platform for the community to preserve and showcase its rich cultural identity.

Adding to the excitement, a variety of fun-filled races and sporting activities were organised for small children, drawing enthusiastic participation and cheerful support from the gathering. A traditional horse race for local Gujjars was also organised, which emerged as a major attraction of the event and witnessed spirited participation from local riders.

Adding further value to the mela, various government departments and institutions, including Horticulture, Fisheries (Pisciculture), Forest Department, NRLM and State Bank of India, set up informative stalls at the venue. The stalls provided an interactive platform for locals to gain awareness about various government schemes, welfare initiatives, available opportunities and the procedures for availing the same. In addition, a medical team from Chak Keegam Battalion remained present at the venue to provide medical assistance and attend to patients requiring medical attention, further enhancing the community-centric nature of the event.

At the conclusion of the event, all winners of the various competitions and races were felicitated and awarded, while participants who presented cultural programmes were also honoured in recognition of their enthusiastic participation and contribution towards making the mela a memorable celebration.

The mela provided a vibrant platform for community interaction, cultural expression and strengthening bonds of friendship and mutual trust between the local population and the Army. The enthusiastic participation of the Gujjar and Bakarwal communities reflected the shared spirit of harmony, inclusivity and togetherness. The Mela concluded on a joyous note, leaving participants and spectators with cherished memories of a day dedicated to culture, camaraderie and community celebration.
