Srinagar, Sept 22 (JKNS): The Inter-College Women’s Badminton and Table Tennis Tournament commenced at Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, on Tuesday, with teams from colleges across the Kashmir Valley participating in the event.
Prof. (Dr.) Twinkle Suri, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, J&K, inaugurated the tournament as Chief Guest, while Prof. (Dr.) Shabnam Ara, Dean Students Welfare, Cluster University Srinagar attended as Guest of Honour. The dignitaries were accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by the NCC cadets of the college.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Twinkle Suri congratulated the host college for organizing the tournament and underscored the importance of sports as an integral part of education. She encouraged women students to participate actively in sporting activities and compete with confidence, dedication and sportsmanship.
Welcoming the guests and participating teams, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq highlighted the role of sports in the holistic development of students. She said participation in sports contributes to physical and mental well-being while fostering discipline, confidence, teamwork and leadership.
Prof. (Dr.) Shabnam Ara emphasized discipline, commitment and regular participation as important elements in achieving excellence in sports and other spheres of life. She urged the participants to uphold the values of fair competition and mutual respect.
The tournament has drawn 13 badminton teams and eight table tennis teams from colleges across the Kashmir Valley.
In the badminton matches played on the opening day, GCOPE Ganderbal defeated Islamia College 2–0, Women’s College Anantnag defeated Women’s College Baramulla 2–0, GDC Eidgah defeated GDC Beerwah 2–0, while SP College registered a 2–1 win over Amar Singh College. In table tennis, SP College defeated Islamia College 2–0, while Women’s College Nawakadal defeated Women’s College Baramulla 2–0.
The inaugural session was hosted by Dr. Eshrat while the vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Samina Akhtar. The tournament is being organized with the coordinated efforts of the college Sports Committee, Department of Physical Education and Sports, faculty members, NCC cadets, officials and supporting staff.
