SWARNIM VIJAY VARSH: COMMEMORATING 50 YEARS OF VICTORY OVER PAKISTAN IN 1971 WAR

In December 1971, in one of the shortest wars in history, lasting only for 13 days, the Indian Armed Forces achieved a stellar, decisive and historic victory over Pakistan Army which led to creation of a new Nation “Bangladesh” and also resulted in the largest military surrender after World War-II, wherein 93,000 Pakistan Army soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army.

 

On 16 December 2021, the Nation will be celebrating 50 years of victory of 1971 War, popularly known in Bangladesh as ‘The Great War of Liberation’. The Golden Jubilee Year 2021 is intended to be celebrated as the ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ showcasing this victory nationwide by year long celebrations from December 2020 to December 2021.

 

The Commemorative events were kick started with lighting of ‘Victory Flame’ at the National War Memorial, New Delhi by the honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 16 December 2020. Four Victory Flames, one each for each cardinal direction are being carried to various parts of India by Tri-Services teams.

 

On 24 Jun 2021 ‘Victory Flame’ reached ‘Watargam Camp’ from Haiderbeg. The ‘Victory Flame’ procession moved through Watargam, Langate and Handwara. The ‘Victory Flame’ was carried by people from different walks of life. An overwhelming response was shown by locals also during the Victory Flame Procession in Handwara town. A large number of local youths were seen paying homage to Victory Flame and accompanying the Victory Flame Procession with national flag in their hands. It was a spectacle to watch people lined on both sides of the road and showering flowers on the ‘Victory Flame’ procession. The highlight of this event was patriotic songs sung by famous singer Waqar Khan, standing on a moving truck all along.

 

This was followed by wreath laying ceremony at War Memorial, Langate and a cultural programme and felicitation of ‘War Veterans’ and ‘Veer Naaris’ by Brigadier
M S Rathore, VSM, Commander 7 Sect RR. This event witnessed huge participation not only from Army but BSF, CRPF, JKP, civil administration, NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides and children, who presented a colorful cultural programme. In addition, a commemorative run was also organised along with a painting competition.
