Srinagar, July 3: The incidents of abductions and kidnapping, drug addiction, theft, suicides and now rapes have removed that ‘sacred veil’ that once used to cover and protect the Kashmir society known to be ‘modest’ and ‘simple’ in nature.
The increasing incidents of crime in society make it amply crystal clear that religious heads and parents have failed in imparting the education that children need for the growth of moral development.
From past one year, four to five incidents of poison consuming cases are reported in Kashmir on daily basis. Suicide cases are on rise and so are the cases related to drug abuse. One didn’t get surprised yesterday, when a policeman was arrested on charges of drug peddling in Ganderbal. The menace of drugs is consuming generations, particularly the new one.
A BJP Panch was booked along with his associates in South Kashmir’s Shopian on charges of abduction and rape. Scores of incidents in recent past were reported where burglars’ looted cash filled chests of sacred shrines and even ATM’s were not spared.
Drug abuse is already there, now the use of liquor by youth is creating a new nuisance. “If you visit Boulevard during evening hours, right from the road starting from Grand Lalit up to Makayi Park, you will find scores of parked vehicles wherein people taste liquor inside the vehicles. These drunkards often came to blows with one another, creating mess on roads and even sometimes humiliate pedestrians,” said a Srinagar resident to news agency KNT.
“I was riding a bike with my son when three young drunkards without any provocation started abusing me. They were dancing on the road and hurling abuses. My son tried to confront them but I stopped him. No son can tolerate his father being insulted by anyone in front of him,” said a local resident adding that police assured him action against these miscreants after he visited police station.
Meanwhile, Police today registered a case after one Muhammad Hafeez Najar of Diver Anderbugh area of Lolab Kupwara reported at Police Station Lalpora that his 15 year old sister has been kidnapped by one Zameer War son of Abdul Qayoom with the help of 6 other persons and they are all residents of Diver Lolab.
A police official said that all efforts are on to trace the abducted girl.
An elderly person said that religious heads, parents, teachers and sincere policing can play a great role in eradication of social evils. “The Kashmiri society will have to rise on its own to curb these evils,” he said lamenting that religious heads failed the society.
“Parents have no control over children. Children take advantage of liberty and indulge in crime activities. In absence of moral education, crime is taken as leisure. Cell phones have disconnected the cord between parents and children. Lack of unity, jealousy, and grudge among religious preachers has left society on the mercy of God.” (KNT)
