MeT Predicts Intense Rainfall and Potential Flash Floods in Vulnerable Areas Across Kashmir and Jammu Regions from 4th July
Srinagar, July 03 : In an unprecedented weather event, Srinagar today witnessed scorching temperatures, peaking at a record-breaking 35.6°C, marking the highest July temperature since 1999.
As per details available , Kokernag also set a new milestone with its all-time highest July temperature of 33.3°C, surpassing the previous record set on 08 July 1993. Qazigund followed closely at 34.4°C, just shy of the 34.5°C record from 11 July 1988.
Other areas in the Kashmir Valley reported similarly high temperatures: Pahalgam recorded 30.2°C, Kupwara and Bandipora both reached 34.5°C, Anantnag reported 34.1°C, Baramulla stood at 33.8°C, Budgam at 34.8°C, Pulwama at 33.5°C, Kulgam at 33.3°C, and Shopian recorded the highest at 35.9°C. In the picturesque hill station of Gulmarg, temperatures rose to 25.7°C, the highest in July in over 11 years but still below the all-time high of 29.4°C observed in 1969.
In the Jammu region, temperatures were equally scorching: Jammu city recorded 36.6°C, Kathua reached a sweltering 39.6°C, while Rajouri reported 37.9°C, and Poonch at 37.7°C. Bhaderwah and Kishtwar both experienced high temperatures of 35.6°C, Udhampur at 34.4°C, and Samba at 37.4°C. Batote recorded 29.8°C.
In Ladakh, known for its cooler climate, Leh reported 30.7°C, while Kargil reached 33.9°C.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a forecast warning of intermittent spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected across the region. On 4th July, there will be intermittent spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places, with isolated heavy rain over Jammu Division.
From 5th to 6th July, the region may experience intermittent moderate rainfall at most places in J&K, with heavy showers or rainfall at a few places. On 7th July, there will be intermittent spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places, with isolated heavy rain over Jammu Division. From 8th to 10th July, rain or thundershowers are predicted at scattered places in Jammu Division towards late night or early morning and at a few places in Kashmir Division.
The Centre also cautioned about the potential for flash floods from 4th to 6th July, especially in vulnerable areas. Low-lying regions may face temporary waterlogging, with isolated instances of moderate thunderstorms and lightning. (KF)
