Jammu, October 2: Sayed Mushtaq Bukhari, a prominent politician and former minister, has passed away at the age of 75 in the Pamrote Surankote area of Poonch district. According to officials, Bukhari died at his home this morning.
Bukhari was the BJP candidate for the Surankote constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the Jammu region. He had a long political career, serving as a two-time legislator from Surankote and was once a close ally of National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
In February 2022, after nearly four decades with the National Conference, Bukhari left the party due to disagreements over the Scheduled Tribe status for the Pahari community. His departure marked a significant shift in his political journey.
Political leaders across parties have expressed their condolences. Senior PDP leader and Poonch Haveli candidate Shamim Ahmed Ganai, among others, paid tribute to Bukhari’s contributions to the region.
Bukhari’s legacy in Jammu and Kashmir politics will be remembered as he leaves behind a complex yet impactful history.
