Moscow: The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday officially announced the approval of the US-proposed ceasefire deal with Lebanon.
Late on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said that the Israeli and Lebanese governments have accepted Washington’s proposal for a ceasefire, which would, among other things, make Israeli forces withdraw from Lebanon in 60 days. The ceasefire is expected to start at 02:00 GMT on Wednesday.
“The Security Cabinet this evening, in a 10-1 vote, approved the US proposal for a ceasefire arrangement in Lebanon. Israel appreciates the US contribution to the process and maintains its right to act against any threat to its security,” the office said in a statement.
Since October 1, Israel has been conducting a ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Despite suffering losses, the Lebanese movement has been fighting Israeli troops on the ground and launching rockets across the border. Israel says its main objective is to create conditions for the return of 60,000 residents who fled shelling in the north. The Jewish state has also faced criticism for attacking UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
