DC Shopian visits Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary

SHOPIAN: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar today visited the Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary to review wildlife protection services of the department.
During the visit, the DC assessed the conservation efforts and protection services in place to safeguard the sanctuary’s wildlife and their habitats.
By reviewing wildlife protection services, the DC stressed to ensure the sanctuary continues to thrive as a protected habitat for various wildlife species, preserving the biodiversity with special focus on Markhor.
The need to strengthen the conservation efforts for increasing the population of Markhor, engaging wildlife experts and consultancy services and replicating the best conservation practices was sought for with particular emphasis on its natural environment.
The equipment availability of the wildlife division was assessed and further augmentation discussed for provision.
DC also inspected the foot path development works to Aliabad and Sukh Sarais and directed for augmenting the developed path under convergence with MGNREGA.
The sanctuary, located in Shopian district, is home to diverse flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Pir Panjal markhor.
The sanctuary spans over 340 square kilometers and is characterized by its stunning landscapes, with dense forests, lush meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
The Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary is not only a haven for wildlife enthusiasts but also offers opportunities for trekking and adventure activities.
DIO Shopian, Showkat Hussain Ganie and officials of the Wildlife department were also present on the occasion.
