Srinagar: The government clarified on Friday evening that the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel remained fully operational today, refuting claims of closure for VVIP movement. Delays were caused by slippery roads and traffic congestion.
In a post on X, DIPR wrote, “Contrary to incorrect reports, no tube of the Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel was closed for VVIP movement today. The delay was solely due to slippery roads and subsequent traffic congestion, which also halted VVIP movement. In fact, both tubes remained operational throughout. We strongly urge media outlets to act responsibly and verify facts and avoid spreading misinformation.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also addressed the situation on X, stating, “Just spoke to DC Anantnag about the current situation of the road between Qazigund and the tunnel. The icy conditions have caused traffic to back up. The stranded vehicles, in both directions, are slowly moving and being assisted where necessary. The DC is on the spot with his team. I’ve instructed him to ensure that vehicles with families and children must be given priority. If necessary, arrangements for overnight shelter will be made. The DC is accompanied by an ambulance in case of any medical emergency.” (JKNS)
