Colombo: The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday seized gold weighing 11 kg and 300 grams being smuggled from the Island nation in a dinghy and arrested three persons in connection with the gold smuggling racket.
In a statement, the Sri Lankan Navy said on receipt of information by the Northwestern Naval Command of gold smuggling, a team of Special Boat Squadron attached to SLNS Vijaya intercepted the suspicious dinghy off the Baththalangunduwa Island off Kalpitiya and recovered 11.300 kg of gold biscuits being smuggled from the country.
The special operation led to the apprehension of three persons, hailing from Kalpitiya.
The suspects along with gold were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake for onward legal action, the statement said.
The gold is suspected to have been smuggled to India.
