Srinagar: The ongoing wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir has significantly reduced the seasonal rainfall deficit from 80% to 42%, with heavy precipitation recorded across various districts in recent days.

According to official data available with JKNS, cumulative precipitation between February 25-28 has led to a substantial increase in snow depth across higher reaches. Gulmarg recorded 113 cm, Sonamarg 75 cm, while elevated areas of Kupwara, Bandipora, and South Kashmir received between 70-90 cm and 60-90 cm of snow, respectively.

The fresh wet spell has notably reduced the seasonal rainfall deficit from 80% to 42%, the data stated.

Between January and February 2025, J&K and Ladakh collectively recorded 131.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 225.4 mm, marking a 42% deficit. However, the wet spell from February 26-28 alone resulted in 78.4 mm of rainfall—an increase of 407% over the normal 15.5 mm for the period.

Jammu and Kashmir had experienced a prolonged dry spell of nearly two months, raising concerns over a potential water crisis. However, the recent wet spell has significantly improved precipitation levels, alleviating the deficit.—(JKNS)
