June 16: As Operation Sindoor unfolded with precision and resolve, marking a decisive chapter in India’s counter-terrorism efforts, the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) demonstrated unwavering commitment by continuing to provide seamless healthcare services in border areas, despite the heightened operational tempo.
The operation, spearheaded by the Indian Armed Forces, primarily targeted terrorist infrastructure. However, its sustained success was underpinned by robust institutional support systems, including uninterrupted medical care for veterans. ECHS polyclinics situated in forward and sensitive locations remained fully operational throughout the course of the operation, extending timely medical care to entitled beneficiaries.
The Regional Centres of ECHS at Jammu and Jalandhar, in close coordination with Station Headquarters, ensured the continuous functioning of polyclinics in remote areas including Rajouri, Naushera, Surankot, Sundarbani, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Firozepur. These facilities maintained regular outpatient services, diagnostic care, and medicine distribution, despite their proximity to the border and operational constraints. Staffing levels were sustained to guarantee uninterrupted delivery of essential medical services.
In districts directly impacted by the operation, polyclinics functioned with optimal staffing even in the absence of hardened infrastructure. This steadfastness reflects the institutional resilience and professional dedication of the ECHS workforce. Additionally, empanelled hospitals were sensitised to remain on alert for any exigency. Their prompt and cooperative response ensured readiness to handle referrals, emergency trauma cases, and potential mass casualty events.
A notable contribution was made by Pir Panjal Hospital in Sunderbani, whose medical support to veterans of the Poonch region is worth appreciating. To further streamline assistance, an ECHS Call Room was established to address any emergent medical needs of veterans.
This continued healthcare delivery amidst adversity stands as a testament to the strength, resilience, and professional commitment of the ECHS contractual staff. Their dedication ensured that the medical needs of veterans were met without compromise, reinforcing the core values of service and care in times of national exigency.
