On the solemn occasion of Major Rohit Sharma’s martyrdom day, the Indian Army’s 25 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Mandi Battalion organized a heartfelt remembrance ceremony at Sawjiyan. This event paid tribute to the valour and sacrifice of a soldier who exemplified courage and leadership during one of the most challenging periods in Jammu and Kashmir.

In 1998, Major Rohit Sharma of the 8th Jammu And Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, was deployed in the Poonch district along the Line of Control (LOC). This region was notorious for its volatility, with frequent ceasefire violations and incessant infiltration attempts by terrorists, often facilitated by Pakistani security forces. The situation was dire, and the threat from terrorist groups was ever-present, requiring constant vigilance and readiness from Indian security forces.

On June 17, 1998, intelligence reports indicated the presence of three hardcore terrorists in the vicinity of Tirchal Area of Mandi Sector, Poonch. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Major Rohit Sharma swiftly mobilized his Quick Reaction Team (QRT) and ordered the commando platoon ‘Ghatak’ to converge on the suspected location. His decisive actions demonstrated not only his tactical acumen but also his commitment to safeguarding his comrades and the local populace.

Upon reaching the area, Major Sharma established a cordon around the terrorists’ hideout, deploying his troops strategically in a nearby two-storey building. This tactical maneuver showcased his leadership skills and understanding of ground operations. As the cordon was secured, Major Sharma led his assault team with exemplary bravery, inching closer to the target house where the terrorists held up.

The ensuing confrontation was intense. As the terrorists opened up fire, Major Sharma’s quick intelligence became evident. Observing movement from one of the windows, he crawled forward and lobbed a hand grenade into the hideout. This courageous act proved pivotal in shifting the momentum of the operation. The fierce gun battle continued, with both sides exchanging fire, but Major Sharma remained resolute in his mission.

Tragically, during this exchange, Major Rohit Sharma sustained serious gunshot wounds. Despite his injuries, he continued to engage with unwavering determination. In a final act of valour, he intercepted a terrorist attempting to breach the cordon, firing at him from close range. It was a moment that epitomized his dedication to duty, even in the face of mortal danger.

Major Rohit Sharma ultimately succumbed to his injuries, sacrificing his life for his country. His bravery and selflessness ensured that all three terrorists were neutralized during the operation, preventing further threats to innocent lives.

As officers and soldiers gathered at Sawjiyan to honour his memory, reflections on his legacy resonated deeply within the ranks of the Indian Army. Major Rohit Sharma’s indomitable spirit and heroism continue to inspire generations of soldiers who pledge to uphold the values of courage, integrity, and sacrifice.

The remembrance ceremony served not only as a tribute to a fallen hero but also as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who protect our nation. Major Rohit Sharma will forever be remembered as a symbol of bravery and commitment to duty—a true martyr whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those who serve and protect India.
