Srinagar,April 09 :Srinagar, Apr 09 : The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday issued a notice to Jammu and Kashmir government on a plea seeking restoration of 4G internet services in the Union Territory.
A three-judge bench of Justice N V Ramana, Justice R Subhash Reddy and B R Gavai issued notice to J&K government’s standing counsel through e-mail. The notice is returnable within a week.
Advocates Shadan Farasat and Huzefa Ahamadi appeared for the petitioner via Video conferencing.
Ahamadi submitted that in view of the Lockdown, it is extremely necessary to enhance technology and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
” The virtual classes of students can only be done through enhancement of technology,” Ahamdi submitted, Live Law reported.
“The virtual classes of students can only be done through enhancement of technology,” submitted the petitioner.
The PIL filed by Foundation for Media Professionals has challenged the government order which resticted internet speed in mobile data services to 2G only, for being violative of Articles 14,19, 21 and 21A of constitution of India.
It is pertinent to mention that authorities snapped all communication services including internet on late hours of August 4, 2019 a day before New Delhi abrogated special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and split erstwhile state into two Union Territories. Later on after reviewing security and law and order situation in the region, authorities restored mobile calling followed by 2G internet facility but high speed internet service is yet to be restored despite repeated pleas from all walks of life including mainstream political parties.
