Budgam, Aug 2 (JKNS): Residents of Parnewa in Budgam district have expressed serious concern over the neglect of newly constructed structures at the local fruit mandi, alleging that the lack of oversight has turned the premises into a hub for illegal activities.
The buildings, equipped with electronic and hardware facilities, were constructed months ago by the Department of Horticulture. However, locals told news agency JKNS that no caretakers were appointed to maintain or secure the property after the completion of construction.
“Public property belongs to everyone, but who is responsible for its care? Is it the public or the government?” asked one resident, highlighting the absence of accountability.
Another local said, “After the completion of these buildings, the department abandoned them. Drug addicts and smokers now use these premises for illegal activities. This is unfortunate and unacceptable.”
The residents urged the Horticulture Department to immediately appoint caretakers and take necessary measures to safeguard the premises. “The department should have kept a caretaker here to protect these structures. We, too, failed to protect them, which is an unfortunate part of the story,” another resident lamented.
Locals have appealed to authorities to take swift action before the situation worsens. (JKNS)
