Budgam, Aug 6 (JKNS): A massive protest erupted in Beerwah town of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Wednesday, as scores of women took to the streets opposing the installation of smart electricity meters.
Eyewitnesses told news agency JKNS that the protestors blocked the main road, raising slogans against the authorities and accusing them of “forcefully imposing unaffordable smart meters” on poor households.
“We are poor people and cannot afford the inflated bills these smart meters bring,” said one of the protesting women, as others symbolically returned previously installed meters, declaring them “rejected by the public.”
The protest caused disruption in normal traffic movement for several hours. The women warned that if their concerns were ignored, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
The local administration has yet to issue an official response regarding the incident. (JKNS)
