Srinagar, Oct 27 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly saw a heated exchange on Monday after NC MLA Sajad Shaheen raised concerns over AAP MLA Mehraj Malik’s detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
As per news agency JKNS, Shaheen questioned the legality and justification of the PSA, describing it as “an assault on democratic norms.” He was supported by several opposition MLAs, who demanded the government provide clarity on the issue.
In response, BJP legislators argued that “the Deputy Commissioner (DC) has the authority to impose PSA on individuals violating the law,” adding that the matter is “outside the scope of the Assembly and should not be debated here.”
NC MLAs strongly disagreed, insisting that “the DC is not the final authority for imposing PSA” and called for the passage of a resolution condemning the detention.
The exchange quickly escalated into a tense scene, with members from both sides trading accusations until the Speaker stepped in to restore order. (JKNS)
