Cold Persists Across J&K as Cloudy Skies Linger; Snowfall Likely in Higher Reaches

Srinagar, Dec 20 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir continued to reel under cold weather conditions on Friday night as cloud cover and occasional rain prevailed across several areas, while the Meteorological Department has forecast snowfall in higher altitudes over the next few days.

Despite a marginal rise in temperatures at some places, cold conditions persisted across Kashmir and parts of Jammu, while Ladakh recorded intense sub-zero temperatures.

According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather as per news agency JKNS, the Kashmir region witnessed widespread cold during the night. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.4°C, while Qazigund and Pahalgam settled at minus 1.0°C each. Kupwara registered minus 0.7°C and Kokernag 0.8°C, while Gulmarg recorded 2.0°C.

Pampore recorded minus 2.0°C, Srinagar Airport minus 1.6°C, Awantipora minus 2.2°C and Budgam minus 1.9°C. Anantnag and Baramulla recorded minus 1.4°C and minus 1.5°C respectively. Pulwama and Shopian remained among the coldest places at minus 3.2°C and minus 2.9°C.

Kulgam registered 1.2°C, Ganderbal 0.5°C and Sonamarg 0.7°C. Data for Zojila Pass was unavailable, while Zethan Rafiabad remained non-functional.

In the Jammu region, comparatively milder temperatures were recorded. Jammu city witnessed a minimum temperature of 9.3°C, Banihal 3.8°C, Batote 9.3°C and Katra 10.0°C.

Bhaderwah recorded 4.4°C, Kathua 8.8°C and Jammu Airport 11.0°C. Udhampur settled at 4.0°C, Ramban at 6.5°C, Samba at 5.6°C and Rajouri at 3.8°C. Kishtwar and Reasi recorded 8.3°C and 8.4°C respectively, while temperature data for Doda was not available.

In Ladakh, severe cold conditions prevailed with Leh recording a low of minus 4.2°C, while temperature readings for Kargil and Nubra Valley were unavailable.

Weather experts have advised residents, especially those living in higher reaches, to remain alert as fresh snowfall is expected, which could affect road connectivity and daily life.

The MeT Department has predicted rain and snowfall across parts of Jammu and Kashmir from the evening of December 20 till December 23. — (JKNS)
