Anantnag, Dec 21 (JKNS): In a historic milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) food-grain freight train reached Anantnag Goods Terminal on Sunday, formally integrating the Kashmir Valley with the national freight rail network.
Officials told news agency JKNS that the freight rake, carrying around 1,384 metric tonnes of foodgrains in 21 wagons, arrived from Ajitwal, marking a major step towards ensuring uninterrupted and efficient foodgrain supply to the Valley, including its remotest areas.
The development is expected to significantly strengthen the supply chain, stabilise food availability, and provide a major boost to local markets and farmers by reducing transportation costs and delays.
Authorities further informed that 42 additional wagons carrying approximately 2,600 metric tonnes of foodgrains are scheduled to arrive soon, which will further enhance food security and support regional economic growth.
The arrival of the freight train has been termed a landmark achievement in improving logistics, connectivity and essential supplies in the Kashmir Valley. (JKNS)
