New Delhi, Jan 24 (JKNS): In a landmark judgment with far-reaching implications for healthcare in India, the Kerala High Court has ruled in favour of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) in Writ Petition No. 41064/2025, filed by the Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR).

The Hon’ble Court verdict means that qualified physiotherapists are legally entitled to use the prefix “Dr.” and are authorized to practice independently, without unnecessary professional restrictions.

The judgment establishes a strong legal precedent affirming physiotherapy as a scientific, evidence-based, and autonomous healthcare profession.

Prof. Dr. Sanjiv K. Jha, President, Indian Association of Physiotherapists, said this is a historic verdict that formally recognizes the independent professional identity, autonomy, and dignity of physiotherapists in India.

The Hon’ble Court has dismissed all contentions of the Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR).

This decision marks a decisive step forward for lakhs of physiotherapists and physiotherapy students across the country. It reinforces the role of physiotherapists as primary healthcare professionals contributing significantly to prevention, treatment, and functional restoration.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Sanjiv K. Jha stated that the judgment is not merely a legal success but a collective victory for the entire physiotherapy fraternity. He emphasized that the ruling will enhance patient access to physiotherapy services, promote ethical independent practice, and strengthen education and research in the field.

The Indian Association of Physiotherapists has termed the verdict a defining milestone in the history of physiotherapy in India, achieved through years of consistent advocacy, unity, and commitment to professional integrity.

The Association has expressed gratitude to NCAHP, all physiotherapists, academicians, students, and supporters nationwide who stood together in this pursuit of justice and professional recognition. (JKNS)
