Jammu, Feb 7 (JKNS): Nagrota MLA Devyani Rana on Saturday delivered her maiden address in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, paying tribute to her late father and senior leader Devender Singh Rana while highlighting key governance and public welfare concerns during the Budget discussion.
Speaking in the House, as per news agency JKNS, Rana expressed concern over the reduction in disaster management allocations, terming it a worrying move at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing increasing climate-related disasters such as floods, landslides and extreme weather events.
She called for stronger disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure and equitable relief mechanisms, stressing that budget cuts in this sector could adversely impact vulnerable communities.
The Nagrota legislator also raised the issue of sanitation workers, urging the government to take direct responsibility for those engaged in cleaning public toilets and sanitation facilities. She demanded that their wages be ensured in a timely and dignified manner.
Rana further flagged the electricity sector, describing the condition of the Power Development Department (PDD) as disturbing, particularly with regard to capital expenditure and infrastructure upgrades. She said persistent power issues continue to affect residents, including in the capital region.
Concluding her maiden intervention, Rana reminded the government that legislators are elected to serve people and must address their grievances with seriousness and urgency.
“We have been sent here by the people to serve them, and their suffering cannot be ignored,” she said. (JKNS)
