The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in collaboration with the Fariq Memorial Foundation Budgam organised a dignified and memorable literary event to commemorate the 21st death anniversary of the eminent thinker, poet and translator Fariq Budgami. The programme was held at the Conference Hall of Tagore Hall, Srinagar, and witnessed the participation of prominent writers, poets, scholars and literature enthusiasts from across the Valley.
The event was presided over by noted writer and poet Akhtar Hussain Mansoor, while distinguished poet and author Fayaz Tilgami attended as the Chief Guest. Renowned actors Nazeer Josh and Muntazir Mohiuddin were present as Guests of Honour.
The programme commenced with a soulful recitation of Naat by Engineer Bilal Ahmad Qasmi, setting a spiritually uplifting tone for the gathering.
In his welcome address, Dr. Mudassir Yousuf described Farooq Budgami as a multifaceted literary figure who made significant contributions in poetry, literary criticism and translation. He noted that Budgami’s writings reflect intellectual maturity, social consciousness and deep cultural awareness. Remembering such literary stalwarts, he said, is in fact a way of preserving and strengthening our rich literary traditions.
On the occasion, Dr. Abdul Wahid Raza presented a detailed scholarly paper on the life and works of Fariq Budgami. He highlighted the poet’s contemporary sensibility, philosophical depth and strong humanistic values. He further observed that through translation, Budgami built meaningful bridges between languages and cultures, thereby introducing Kashmiri literature to broader intellectual horizons.
The programme also featured the release of the book “Kath Sabzaran Hanz” authored by Syed Masood Shadab. On this occasion, Saleem Yousuf presented a comprehensive review of the book, terming it a valuable addition to contemporary literature and praising the author’s intellectual seriousness and stylistic maturity.
A major highlight of the event was a Tarhi Mushaira (thematic poetry session) based on a selected line from Fariq Budgami’s ghazal. Several poets presented their compositions as a tribute to the late poet. The recitations beautifully captured intellectual and emotional nuances, earning appreciation and applause from the audience.
In his address, Chief Guest Fayaz Tilgami said that Fariq Budgami was a distinctive poet and thoughtful intellectual who used his pen as a tool for social awakening. He remarked that Budgami’s works continue to inspire reflection and remain a guiding source for the younger generation. He urged literary institutions to continue organising such commemorative events to safeguard and promote the region’s literary heritage.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Shabnam Rafiq, Senior Officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, who carried out her responsibilities with elegance and professionalism.
At the conclusion of the programme, Basharat Hussain, grandson of Fariq Budgami, extended his heartfelt thanks to the Cultural Academy, the participants and the distinguished guests. He affirmed that such literary events would continue to be organised in the future to preserve and promote the legacy of Fariq Budgami.
