Jammu, Feb 20 (JKNS): In a major boost to higher medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned a total of 24 Postgraduate Super-Specialty (DM/M.Ch) seats in key government medical institutions for the Academic Year 2025-26.
As per a Public Notice issued by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of NMC vide No. M-19011/13/2025/NMC/PGMARB (e-file No. 8337538) dated February 20, 2026, the approved seats include new sanctions as well as increases in intake a copy of the notice is available with news agency JKNS, the notification, signed by Dr. M. K. Ramesh, President, MARB, states that the individual Letters of Permission (LoPs) for the newly sanctioned and enhanced seats are under process and the notified list shall be treated as deemed LoPs for counselling purposes by the competent authorities.
Out of the 24 approved seats, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has been allotted 10 seats. These include 2 seats each in DM Pulmonary Medicine and DM Cardiology (against 4 seats requested in each), 2 seats in M.Ch Paediatric Surgery, 2 in DM Medical Gastroenterology, and 2 seats in M.Ch Urology.
Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has been granted 8 seats, including 4 seats in DM Cardiology — marking the first-ever approval of the course at the institution — and 4 seats in M.Ch Urology against 6 seats sought.
Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar has received 6 seats, with 2 seats each sanctioned in DM Neuro Anaesthesia, DM Paediatric and Neonatal Anaesthesia, and DM Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology.
The NMC has asked concerned institutions to report any inadvertent discrepancies in the notified list within seven working days.
In a separate communication, Dr. Raghav Langer, Secretary, NMC, directed all Deans/Principals of medical colleges and stakeholders to take note of the approvals and initiate necessary action.
The addition of 24 super-specialty seats is expected to significantly enhance advanced medical training capacity and strengthen tertiary healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
