Srinagar, Mar 5 (JKNS): The Office of the Grand Mufti has issued a clarification reaffirming the historic and hereditary legacy of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while categorically rejecting claims about any fresh appointment to the position of Mirwaiz, terming such assertions as baseless and misleading.
In a statement issued here to news agency JKNS, Office of the Grand Mufti categorically refuted claims circulating in certain quarters regarding the alleged appointment of any individual as Mirwaiz by the Mufti-e-Azam or by the Office of the Grand Mufti.
While communicating on behalf of the institution, the Advisor to the Grand Mufti Er Danish Reshi clarified that no such appointment has been made, nor does the office endorse or recognize any such assertion, it reads.
The statement described the claim as baseless and misleading, urging the public to rely only on verified communications issued through official channels.
The clarification comes amid renewed public discussion surrounding the historical and religious institution of the Mirwaiz in Kashmir.
Statement reads, The position of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir carries a distinct and well-documented legacy rooted in the lineage of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who continues the hereditary tradition tracing back to Mirwaiz Rasool Shah. The Mirwaiz family has historically played a central role in religious guidance, socio-spiritual reform, and public discourse in the Valley.
The institution of the Mirwaiz emerged as a religious leadership position entrusted with delivering sermons at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, guiding the faithful on theological, ethical, and community matters. Over generations, the Mirwaiz lineage has contributed significantly to Islamic scholarship, educational reform, and socio-religious awakening in Kashmir, it reads.
The Office of the Grand Mufti emphasized that religious titles and positions with deep historical roots must not be politicized or misrepresented. It reiterated its respect for established religious institutions and urged restraint and responsibility in public discourse, it reads.
