Heavy Rains Trigger Repeated Flooding in Ani Koul, Shamshipora Residents Face Losses; Demand Permanent Solution

Shopian, Apr 7 (JKNS): Whenever it rains, the Ani Koul stream in Shamshipora area of Shopian overflows, resulting in repeated and significant damage to orchards, agricultural land, and nearby residential houses.

This has become a long-standing and serious issue for the local population, as even light to moderate rainfall leads to the stream breaching its limits due to the absence of a proper drainage system and protective bund. Residents remain under constant threat during rainy periods, as water quickly spreads into fields and residential areas, causing economic losses and distress. Despite the recurring nature of this problem, no permanent solution has been implemented so far.

Heavy rainfall since last night has once again exposed the vulnerability of the area, with a sharp rise in water levels in the Ani Koul stream. The overflowing water has inundated orchards and farmlands, damaging crops and leading to severe waterlogging. The continuous flow of excess water has also resulted in soil erosion, washing away fertile topsoil and uprooting plants, thereby affecting the livelihood of local farmers who depend heavily on agriculture and horticulture.

Locals stated that this issue occurs every year, particularly during the months of March, April, and even in the winter season. They added that the matter has been brought to the notice of the concerned authorities several times, but no effective or lasting measures have been taken to resolve the problem.

Residents expressed concern over the continued neglect and emphasized that the construction of a proper protective bund and an efficient drainage system is essential to prevent the recurring overflow of the stream and safeguard both agricultural land and residential properties.

The aggrieved residents have urged the District Administration Shopian to take immediate cognizance of the situation and initiate necessary steps without further delay to prevent further losses and provide a permanent solution. (JKNS)
