Srinagar, Apr 18 (JKNS): In a significant development for Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi, traders at Sopore Fruit Mandi—widely regarded as Asia’s second-largest fruit market—have unanimously elected Zahoor Ahmad Bhat as President of the newly formed Kashmir Fruit Traders Association at Fruit Mandi Apple Town Sopore.
The decision was taken during a joint meeting of fruit traders and stakeholders, where members underscored the need for a unified, transparent, and accountable platform to address longstanding challenges within the mandi. The formation of this new association marks an important step towards strengthening coordination among traders and ensuring effective representation of their concerns.
Zahoor Ahmad Bhat’s unanimous election reflects a strong sense of trust and confidence among the trading community. In his address, Bhat expressed heartfelt gratitude to traders and workers for reposing faith in his leadership. He assured that he would work with dedication, integrity, and transparency to safeguard the interests of traders and fruit growers alike.
He further emphasized the importance of collective efforts to improve the functioning of the mandi, enhance facilities for stakeholders, and take up key issues with the concerned authorities. Bhat reiterated his commitment to promoting efficiency, accountability, and sustainable growth within the fruit trade sector.
The development comes amid growing concerns raised by fruit growers over financial mismanagement and lack of accountability in recent years. Members noted that the new association aims to restore trust by ensuring fair practices, financial discipline, and better coordination between growers and traders.
The association also outlined its vision to strengthen infrastructure, streamline market operations, and support the overall growth of Kashmir’s fruit industry—an economic backbone that sustains thousands of livelihoods across the Valley.
Members expressed optimism that under the new leadership, the Sopore Fruit Mandi will witness greater transparency, improved efficiency, and inclusive progress for all stakeholders. (JKNS)
