Budgam, Aug 8 (JKNS): A progressive farmer from Warihama Beerwah area of Budgam district has achieved success in lotus stem (Nadru) cultivation on a waterlogged paddy field without receiving any support from the Agriculture Department.

Tariq Ahmad Bhat, who owns about 2 kanals of land affected by chronic waterlogging, said he switched from traditional paddy farming to lotus cultivation after repeated losses.

Speaking ro news agency JKNS, Tariq said, “I did this entirely on my own no scheme, no subsidy, no guidance. Just hard work.”

His innovation has not only transformed otherwise unproductive land but has also earned appreciation from local residents and fellow farmers, who call it a source of inspiration in the face of climate challenges.

Several other farmers in nearby areas are now exploring the idea of replicating the model in similarly affected fields.

Bhat further said, growing lotus was something he had always dreamt of, especially after witnessing similar cultivation during visits to other regions. “I used to think, why can’t we grow Nadru here in Budgam too? Today, that dream has finally taken shape on my own land,” he said.

He added that the journey was not easy. “There were moments when I thought it wouldn’t work. But I kept faith in my idea. Seeing those lotus stems flourish now gives me hope that small farmers can change the game, even without big support.” (JKNS)
