Srinagar, May 9 (JKNS): Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Dr. G.V. Sundeep Chakravarthy on Saturday said that sports activities are being actively promoted across Srinagar to channelise the energy of youth towards constructive activities and keep them away from drug abuse.

Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the Ayodhya Cricket Tournament final, SSP Srinagar, as per news agency JKNS, congratulated both the winning and runner-up teams and appreciated the fighting spirit, leadership qualities and cricketing skills displayed by the players.

“This ground reflects the bright future of Srinagar. Our main objective behind organising such tournaments is to encourage youth towards positive and constructive activities under the vision of Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan,” he said.

The SSP said Jammu and Kashmir Police has been organising sports events to send a strong message to the younger generation to remain engaged in education and sports instead of falling into drug abuse and other negative activities.

“We want our youth to focus on books and cricket bats, not drugs. Fill grounds and libraries, not police stations. This is the real path towards a drug-free society,” he said.

Dr. Chakravarthy further said that Srinagar Police has intensified its crackdown on drug networks and financial ecosystems linked to narcotics, while simultaneously organising youth engagement programmes across the city.

On community participation, the SSP said police have received an encouraging response from the public, market associations and local communities in sharing information related to drug abuse and peddling.

“There is no need to be afraid. Intelligence sharing and community participation are necessary to win this war against drugs. We assure people that their identity will remain completely anonymous and suitable rewards will also be provided,” he added.

The SSP said the fight against drugs cannot be won by police alone and requires collective efforts from society.

He also informed that Srinagar Police has organised several tournaments in different areas during the past year and larger sports events are being planned in the coming months, especially in downtown Srinagar.

“Youth themselves are approaching us and requesting football and cricket tournaments in their localities. This is a very positive sign and we will continue to support such initiatives,” he said. (JKNS)
