Anantnag, May 16 (JKNS): In a first-of-its-kind move aimed at tightening accountability in the fight against narcotics, Anantnag Police has initiated action against several Nambardars and Chowkidars for allegedly failing to report illegal poppy cultivation in their respective areas as mandated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
As per news agency JKNS, Police has initiated action against concerned Nambardars and Chowkidars for their alleged failure to report instances of illegal poppy cultivation in their respective jurisdictions, as mandated under law.
During a review of recently registered cases under the NDPS Act at Police Station Srigufwara pertaining to illegal cultivation of poppy crop in the area, it came to light that no prior information regarding such unlawful cultivation had been furnished to the police by the concerned Nambardars or Chowkidars, despite their statutory obligation to report such activities under Section 47 of the NDPS Act.
Taking serious note of the omission, Anantnag Police has, in the first instance, initiated a preliminary enquiry to ascertain the factual position and fix responsibility of the concerned officials in accordance with law. Further legal action under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act shall follow based on the outcome of the enquiry.
