Srinagar, May 25 (JKNS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday launched a massive crackdown against banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) across Kashmir, conducting raids at multiple locations in Central and South Kashmir in connection with an investigation into the alleged revival of separatist and anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources told news agency JKNS that NIA teams, assisted by Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces, carried out simultaneous searches in Srinagar’s Lal Bazar area and several locations in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Among the locations raided was the residence of a person in the Muloo Chitragam area of Zainapora in Shopian district.
Sources said the person was allegedly affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and had served as Ameer-e-Jamaat for District Shopian besides being associated with Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom Imam Sahib.
Sources further said searches were also conducted at JeI-linked Siraj-ul-Uloom in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian.
Officials said the raids are part of NIA’s ongoing investigation into alleged attempts to revive Jamaat-e-Islami activities to promote separatism and anti-India propaganda in Jammu and Kashmir.
In February 2024, the Union Government had declared “Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir” an “Unlawful Association” for another five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.
According to officials, Jamaat-e-Islami has been accused of involvement in fomenting terrorism, supporting separatist ideology and fueling anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
