Beerwah, Jun 5 (JKNS): Government Degree College (GDC) Beerwah celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with a series of environmental awareness and conservation activities organized by the Department of Environmental Science and the Department of Water Management.

As part of the celebrations, a large-scale sanitation drive was conducted in collaboration with the Municipal Committee Beerwah. The initiative aimed to promote awareness about environmental hygiene, waste management, and cleanliness as essential measures for safeguarding public health and the environment. Students, faculty members, municipal officials, sanitation workers, and local residents actively participated in the campaign, reflecting a strong collective commitment towards a cleaner and healthier society.

In another major activity, a plantation drive was organized in collaboration with the Forest Division Budgam of the Jammu & Kashmir Forest Department. During the programme, deodar (Cedrus deodara) saplings were planted across the college campus to encourage afforestation, enhance green cover, and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability. The drive highlighted the vital role of trees in combating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance.

The events witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teaching and non-teaching staff, officials and workers of the Municipal Committee Beerwah, representatives of the Forest Division Budgam, and members of the local community.

The programmes were conducted under the patronage of Dr. Sheikh Bilal Ahmad, Principal of GDC Beerwah. The activities were coordinated by Dr. Qazi Ashiq Hussain, Head of the Department of Environmental Science, and Prof. Basheer Ahmad Sheergojree, Head of the Department of Water Management. They emphasized the importance of sustained environmental action and community participation in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

The NSS, NCC, NGC, and Eco-Club units of the college also played an active role in the successful implementation of the programmes.

The celebrations were organized in line with the World Environment Day 2026 theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The theme highlights the significance of nature-based solutions in mitigating climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations.

Through these initiatives, GDC Beerwah reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability education, and active community engagement in environmental conservation efforts. (JKNS)
