New Delhi, Jun 8 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday sought support from constituents of the INDIA alliance for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, urging opposition parties to participate in the National Conference’s proposed protest campaign during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

As per details available with news agency JKNS, Omar Abdullah raised the issue during the INDIA Bloc meeting held in New Delhi and informed opposition leaders about the National Conference’s decision to launch a protest in support of statehood restoration.

According to party sources, Omar told the gathering that the demand for restoration of statehood is not merely a political issue but a democratic aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

He appealed to leaders of various opposition parties to stand in solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and extend support when the National Conference stages its protest in the national capital.

Sources said Omar Abdullah also informed the meeting that the National Conference would formally reach out to individualy opposition leaders and parties seeking their participation in the campaign.

The development comes days after the National Conference announced plans to hold a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session to press for restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir.

Statehood restoration has remained a key political agenda of the National Conference, which has repeatedly maintained that the return of full statehood is essential for fulfilling commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The INDIA Bloc meeting was attended by senior opposition leaders from across the country and deliberated on various political and parliamentary issues ahead of the forthcoming session of Parliament. (JKNS)
