Shopian, Jun 9 (JKNS): In an inspiring achievement for Jammu & Kashmir and a proud moment for Shopian district, Waseem Ahmad Bakshi, son of labourer Mohammad Sadiq Bakshi of Cheki Diaroo, Drangnar village, who was recently selected for the Indian Para Cricket Team, met Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, at the Mini Secretariat on Tuesday.

The Deputy Commissioner congratulated Waseem on his remarkable achievement and expressed hope that his success would inspire more youth to pursue sports and excel at national and international levels.

Waseem’s accomplishment is the result of years of hard work, dedication, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to his goals.

Since 2021, he has consistently represented Jammu & Kashmir in national-level para cricket competitions and has emerged as one of the prominent para cricketers from the region.

His outstanding performances over the years have now earned him a place on the international stage. Waseem is set to represent India in upcoming international para cricket tournaments.

Apart from cricket, Waseem has also distinguished himself in athletics. Recently, he represented Jammu & Kashmir in the 24th National Para Athletics Championship 2026 held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where he was the only participant from Kashmir.

Earlier, he won two bronze medals at a major sporting event in Uttarakhand. In 2023, Waseem secured a gold medal in the 100-metre race at the Vyom Apple Fest. Additionally, he has won more than six medals at the inter-college level, highlighting his versatility and sporting excellence.

Waseem’s remarkable journey from a remote village in Shopian to earning a place in the Indian Para Cricket Team stands as a testament to determination, resilience and perseverance, inspiring youth across Jammu & Kashmir, particularly persons with disabilities, to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges.
