Srinagar, June 27 (JKNS): Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofar Khan, on Saturday said that interfaith dialogue, Kashmiriyat and shared cultural traditions are the foundations of peaceful coexistence, urging educational institutions to play a leading role in promoting harmony, inclusiveness and responsible citizenship.
Addressing the gathering during the Interfaith Dialogue on “Urdu, Kashmiriyat and Shared Cultural Traditions” at SKICC Srinagar, Prof. Nilofar, as per news agency JKNS, said the University of Kashmir remains committed to creating platforms that strengthen dialogue, research and community engagement while preserving the values of tolerance and mutual respect.
She appreciated Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for encouraging programmes that connect students with society, saying such initiatives had gained momentum over the past several days at SKICC. “These programmes are not only strengthening academics and research but also providing valuable learning experiences for students and faculty by connecting them with society and different organisations,” she said.
The Vice Chancellor also praised veteran statesman Dr. Karan Singh, describing his vision as exemplary, and appreciated the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) for its continued collaboration with the University of Kashmir in promoting Urdu through academic and literary programmes.
Highlighting Kashmir’s rich legacy, Prof. Nilofar said the Valley has historically been a land where different faiths, cultures and traditions flourished together. “Kashmiriyat represents tolerance, compassion, inclusivity and respect for human dignity. These timeless values transcend religious and social boundaries and remind us that our common humanity is greater than our differences,” she said.
She said that in today’s rapidly changing world, where societies face increasing polarisation and misunderstanding, genuine interfaith dialogue creates opportunities for people to understand different perspectives, build trust and strengthen social cohesion.
She also described Urdu as a language of pluralism, humanism and cultural expression that has long celebrated shared values through its literature and scholarship.
Prof. Nilofar further said universities have a special responsibility to promote empathy, critical thinking and respect for diversity.
She stressed that education should not only impart knowledge but also nurture responsible citizens capable of contributing towards peace, harmony and national integration.
Calling upon the younger generation to become ambassadors of peace, she said today’s youth, exposed to diverse ideas through digital platforms and global interactions, must be equipped with the values of dialogue, mutual respect and inclusiveness.
She expressed hope that the deliberations during the programme would lead to meaningful partnerships for promoting harmony, understanding and shared human values. (JKNS)
