Srinagar, July 3 (JKNS): Five student athletes from Delhi Public School, Srinagar, secured coveted positions to represent the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir at upcoming national athletic championships.
The selections across rugby and martial arts mark a major milestone for the institutional sports program as these young women athletes prepare to compete on the grandest domestic stage.
Three standout students from Class XI earned their places in the 2026 Junior National Rugby 7’s Championship for Girls. Ahana Manzoor and Maryum, alongside Sasha Munir, secured their selection through intensive Open Selection Trials.
The Jammu and Kashmir Rugby Association conducted the trials under the direct supervision of the J&K Sports Council at the Rugby Play Field within the Polo Ground in Srinagar on 29 June, 2026.
These athletes will travel to Hyderabad, Telangana, to compete at Woxsen University from 6 July to 7 July, 2026.
Simultaneously, the martial arts arena witnessed historic success as Class XII students Alishba Jeelani and Houriyah Showket clinched competitive berths for the 14th Senior National Pencak Silat Championship.
This high-profile national tournament will convene at the Gymnasium Hall in Shillong, Meghalaya, from 6 July to 8 July, 2026. The dual achievements underscore the robust athletic culture nurtured at Delhi Public School, Srinagar, where students consistently challenge regional boundaries and claim national recognition.
The school leadership commended the dedication of the athletes as they prepare to compete on the national stage. Principal, Ms. Shafaq Afshan, highlighted the academic and physical endurance of the students, stating that “these selections reflect the rigorous discipline and holistic development that define our students as they step onto the national arena to showcase their sportsmanship.” Chairman, Mr. Vijay Dhar, focused on the long-term impact of sports education, noting that “our goal remains to build resilient leaders who excel beyond the classroom, and these young women exemplify the future of sports excellence in Jammu and Kashmir.” (JKNS)
