Shopian, Aug 5 (JKNS): In a remarkable example of innovation and sustainable farming, Haroon Rashid, a resident of Vehil village in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, has transformed the rooftop of his house into a flourishing organic farm. Spread across approximately 40×42 square feet, the rooftop has become home to more than 100 varieties of vegetables and fruit plants, all cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
Haroon began his rooftop farming journey in 2017 with the aim of producing healthy, chemical-free food for his family. Over the years, his dedication, patience and consistent efforts have turned the small rooftop into a highly productive organic farm, attracting appreciation from farmers and visitors alike.
His farming initiative was strengthened through regular guidance and technical support from the Department of Agriculture, Zone Vehil, and (KVK), Balpora, Shopian, where he received training in modern organic farming techniques, vegetable cultivation and scientific crop management.
Today, the rooftop is filled with a wide range of seasonal vegetables and fruit plants. Despite the limited space, the farm produces an impressive quantity of fresh vegetables throughout the year. The crops are grown naturally without harmful chemicals, making them healthier and environmentally friendly.
Haroon says that organic farming requires proper planning and regular care rather than excessive use of expensive medicines or chemical inputs. By following natural cultivation practices, he has managed to achieve healthy crop growth and excellent yields. The produce not only fulfills his family’s daily vegetable requirements but is also sold in the local market, providing him with an additional source of income.
What started as a small experiment has now grown into a successful model of rooftop farming, earning him lakhs of rupees since its inception. His success demonstrates that even a modest rooftop can be transformed into a productive agricultural space with determination, knowledge and the right guidance.
Haroon Rashid’s inspiring journey is encouraging many young people and aspiring farmers to adopt sustainable agriculture. His rooftop farm stands as a shining example of how innovation, organic cultivation and efficient use of available space can contribute to food security, environmental conservation and rural livelihood generation.
