Srinagar, Aug 9 (JKNS): Ghulam Hassan Kangoo, a pioneering forester, conservationist and environmentalist who played a key role in shaping modern soil and water conservation practices in Jammu and Kashmir, has passed away at the age of 91.

Kangoo, who retired as Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in 1993, was instrumental in establishing the Department of Soil and Water Conservation in 1978 and served as its first Director.

During his long career, he worked extensively on watershed management, soil erosion, degraded-land restoration and pasture development, and was credited with developing more than 50 micro-watersheds across Jammu and Kashmir.

He also contributed to the introduction of scientific approaches including remote sensing, range management and agrostology in natural-resource management in the region.

After retirement, Kangoo continued his environmental work and served as a consultant on conservation and watershed projects associated with international agencies, including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

He was also associated with environmental initiatives and civil society organisations, including the People’s Environmental Council.

Born in Sopore in 1935, Kangoo leaves behind a lasting legacy in the fields of forestry, watershed management, soil conservation and environmental protection in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
