Budgam, October 7: The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) Beerwah, Budgam, designated as a DIET of Excellence, organised the District-Level Northern India Science Drama Contest 2026-27 on October 7, providing students from different schools across the district an opportunity to showcase their scientific knowledge, creativity, confidence and communication skills.

The contest was organised with the objective of promoting scientific temperament, creative thinking, teamwork, critical thinking and effective expression among students. Through dramatic presentations, students creatively highlighted scientific concepts and contemporary issues, underlining the importance and relevance of science in everyday life.

The programme was held under the guidance and leadership of In-charge Principal DIET Beerwah Fayaz Ahmed and District Nodal Officer (DNO) Peer Nasir Din. Faculty members of DIET also participated in the programme and extended support to the participating students and teachers. Teachers accompanied students from various schools during the event.

The performances were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising Arsalan Shafi, Hafizullah Bhat and Tariq Ahmad Sheikh. The judges assessed the participating teams on various parameters, including scientific content, creativity, presentation, expression, relevance to the theme and overall performance.

Students from different schools across Budgam participated enthusiastically in the contest and presented various scientific themes in a creative and engaging manner, demonstrating their scientific understanding, confidence and communication abilities.

Speaking on the occasion, In-charge Principal DIET Beerwah Fayaz Ahmed said that science drama provides students with a creative and engaging platform to move beyond conventional classroom learning, understand scientific concepts and communicate them effectively to others. He said such activities play an important role in developing critical thinking, creativity, teamwork and communication skills among students.

He stressed that science education should not remain confined to theoretical knowledge and that students need to be encouraged towards innovation, practical application and experiential learning. Referring to the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he said there is a need to shift teaching and learning from rote-based education towards practical, experiential and activity-based learning.

“Science without theory is blind, and science without practice is fruitless,” he remarked, stressing the importance of maintaining a balance between theoretical knowledge and its practical application.

He further said that while studying science, students should be able to see innovation and creativity in it—innovation that responds to the needs of the time and contributes positively to society. He said such programmes provide students with an opportunity to transform theoretical knowledge into practical understanding and strengthen their scientific curiosity.

Drawing an analogy, Fayaz Ahmed said that just as a skilled craftsman shapes a stone into a diamond, students too need to refine their scientific knowledge through exploration, understanding and continuous learning so that their future contributions can become meaningful and beneficial to society.

DIET faculty member Shaukat Ahmad, while speaking to the media, said that connecting science education with innovation and real-life needs is the need of the hour. He stressed the importance of encouraging students to think creatively and use scientific knowledge to explore solutions to contemporary challenges.

District Nodal Officer Peer Nasir Din said the Northern India Science Drama Contest provides students with an important opportunity to showcase their talent at a higher level and gain exposure on a wider educational platform. He emphasised the importance of activity-based and experiential learning in strengthening students’ interest in science and developing a spirit of scientific inquiry.

GMS Batapora teacher G.M. Dar appreciated the initiative and said participation in such programmes helps students build confidence, improve communication skills and present their ideas effectively before an audience.

Students also shared their experiences with the media, expressing happiness over the opportunity to participate in the science drama. They said presenting scientific concepts through drama made science more interesting and helped them understand various concepts in a practical and engaging manner.

As per the results, GMS Batapora secured the first position, while other participating schools secured the second and third positions. Certificates were also distributed among the successful teams and participating students in recognition of their performance and participation.

During the programme, speakers highlighted the importance of providing students with platforms where they can actively demonstrate their scientific knowledge, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

At the conclusion of the event, the efforts of the successful teams, participating students, teachers, judges, DIET faculty members and organisers were appreciated. Certificates were distributed among the participants, while gratitude was expressed to all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of making science education more interactive, meaningful and student-centred while nurturing curiosity, creativity and innovation among young learners, enabling them to play an effective role in the fields of science and technology in the future.
