New York, Oct 10 (JKNS): India has strongly criticised Pakistan at the United Nations for spreading “lies and falsehoods” over Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating that the Union Territory “is, and will always remain, an integral and inalienable part of India”.
India’s response came during a discussion on decolonisation in the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, where Member of Parliament Mahima Kumari Mewar delivered India’s Right of Reply to a statement made by Pakistan’s representative.
In her statement as per news agency JKNS, Mewar said Pakistan continued to misuse the UN platform to spread falsehoods about Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is regrettable that Pakistan continues to abuse the UN platform to peddle lies and falsehoods about the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
Mewar also accused Pakistan of human rights violations in areas under its occupation, urging Islamabad to end what she described as repression, brutality and illegal exploitation of resources.
“We call upon Pakistan to stop the grave and ongoing human rights violation in the areas illegally occupied by it, where the population is in open revolt against Pakistan’s military occupation, repression, brutality, and illegal exploitation of resources,” she said.
She further alleged that Pakistani armed forces and their proxies had killed civilians protesting for their basic rights, freedoms and necessities.
“In the last few months, the Pakistani armed forces and their proxies have killed dozens of innocent civilians who were agitating for their basic rights and freedoms and basic necessities,” Mewar said.
Criticising Pakistan’s political and security record, she said a country with a history of military dictatorship, sham elections, incarceration of elected leaders, religious extremism and sponsoring terrorism as an instrument of state policy should refrain from preaching on such issues at the international forum.
Reiterating India’s position, Mewar said Jammu and Kashmir would always remain an integral and inalienable part of the country.
“Jammu and Kashmir is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India,” she said.
Separately, India called for stronger accountability mechanisms for criminal conduct and misconduct by United Nations officials and experts on mission during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee.
Member of Parliament Priya Saroj, delivering India’s national statement on the issue, emphasised the need for stronger cooperation between the UN and member states, effective accountability mechanisms, due process and protection of victims and witnesses.
Saroj said accountability for criminal conduct was essential to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the United Nations.
She noted that between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, the UN Office of Legal Affairs had referred 93 cases involving 93 UN officials and experts on mission to their states of nationality for investigation and possible prosecution.
She stressed that the effectiveness of the accountability framework depended on timely action following referrals and effective cooperation between the United Nations and member states.
Saroj also highlighted India’s legal framework, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Extradition Act, 1962, while reiterating India’s zero-tolerance approach towards criminal conduct and misconduct by UN personnel.
India reaffirmed its commitment to working with member states and the United Nations to strengthen accountability, cooperation and effective implementation of the existing framework. (JKNS)
