When the first ray of dawn falls upon the land of Kashmir, the jawan is already at his duty post, safeguarding the nation and protecting its citizens from every threat. At the same time, the awam begin their day with enthusiasm and cheerfulness. Children get ready for school, women prepare food and collect firewood, while men take their sheep out for grazing. Though they may have different responsibilities, they remain connected through a precious bond the shared commitment to safeguard the land of Kashmir, preserve its culture and maintain peace in the region. Together, they form the strong pillars of Kashmir.

The Army provides the people of Kashmir with various medical facilities and undertakes initiatives such as Operation Sadbhavana and numerous medical camps, even in the coldest and most remote regions. The Army has always stood as a friend in need, providing assistance and rescuing people during snowstorms, avalanches and other emergencies. Its presence in difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions reflects its commitment to serving the people and extending support whenever circumstances demand.

The Army’s role is not limited to providing medical care and saving lives. It also conducts entertainment programmes, cricket leagues and other sporting activities to promote teamwork, unity and a sense of togetherness among the awam. These efforts demonstrate that the image of an Army jawan extends beyond that of a soldier safeguarding the nation’s territory. The jawan is also a friend and a source of support for the people of Kashmir, contributing to community welfare and strengthening mutual trust through meaningful engagement.

Army Goodwill Schools and other educational institutions are providing quality education to the younger generation and serving as a strong bridge between the awam and the jawan. Students are gaining knowledge about national and global developments, current affairs, science, sports, innovation, technological advancements and other important fields. This knowledge helps them analyse situations independently, make wise decisions about their future and contribute positively to the well-being of their families and their land, Kashmir. By encouraging education and nurturing young minds, these institutions help prepare the next generation to meet future challenges with confidence and responsibility.

The relationship between the Army and the awam is one of mutual cooperation, where both contribute their unique strengths and capabilities. The people of Kashmir have a deep-rooted connection with their land and possess an innate understanding of their surroundings. They know the paths, shortcuts and distinctive features of the terrain, which can be valuable in various local activities, including route identification, community assistance and development work. This familiarity with the land reflects the importance of local knowledge and cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by Kashmir’s difficult geography.

During difficult times and crises, the jawans provide machinery, personnel and medical assistance during floods and other emergencies. At the same time, the local Kashmiri awam understand the terrain and often identify practical solutions in challenging situations. Whether it is a flood, avalanche, landslide or snowstorm, or fire incident the awam and the jawan come together to provide swift relief and restore normalcy. Their combined efforts demonstrate the importance of coordination, compassion and collective responsibility in overcoming adversity and helping affected communities recover.

No matter how difficult the circumstances may be, the jawan and the awam stand together in challenging situations. They share an unbreakable bond, perform their respective duties and understand their responsibility towards safeguarding the land of Kashmir, maintaining peace and harmony and protecting its forests, lakes and other beautiful natural landmarks that contribute to the region’s unique beauty. Their shared concern for the safety, prosperity and well-being of Kashmir reinforces the values of cooperation, mutual respect and a common commitment to a peaceful future.

The history of Kashmir must be written not only in terms of its terrain, strategic importance, geographical location and role as a cradle and bedrock of civilisations, but also through the story of its people and their indomitable spirit. The soldier and the local inhabitant, linked by an unbreakable bond of trust, affection and respect, share a unique relationship. While one protects the land, the other helps preserve the spirit of the land. Their hopes are intertwined, and their destinies are linked. Together, in harmony, they rise against all odds to safeguard what is most sacred to them their land, their people and their future.
