KARNAH, KUPWARA: In a significant step towards strengthening tourism infrastructure in Karnah constituency, a Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) has been issued for the construction of a View Point/Gazebo at Dana-Budwan at an estimated cost of ₹29.35 lakh. The proposed project aims to enhance visitor amenities and provide tourists with an opportunity to experience the area’s scenic beauty.
The initiative has been taken forward through the efforts and follow-up of Javaid Ahmad Mirchal, MLA Karnah, as part of ongoing efforts to promote tourism and improve local infrastructure in the constituency. The issuance of the NIT marks the commencement of the tendering process, with the execution of the project subject to the completion of the requisite formalities.
Located in the picturesque border region of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Karnah is known for its majestic mountains, lush green meadows, dense forests and the scenic Kishanganga River. Situated approximately 170–180 kilometres from Srinagar, the region possesses considerable tourism potential owing to its natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
Karnah’s attractions include the Shaurya Gatha Complex at SM Hill, which features a War Memorial, War Museum and a Cultural Centre showcasing Pahari heritage. The complex highlights the valour and sacrifices of Indian Army personnel while providing a platform to showcase the region’s military history and cultural identity.
Teetwal, another prominent destination in the constituency, is known for Azmat-e-Hind, where a 104-foot-high National Flag symbolises national pride and patriotism. The historic Sharda Temple, the Kishanganga River and the historical crossing area near the Line of Control further add to the region’s religious, cultural and historical significance.
The proposed viewpoint at Dana-Budwan is expected to contribute to the development of tourism facilities in the area. With appropriate infrastructure and visitor amenities, such initiatives could encourage tourism, support local entrepreneurship and create opportunities for employment, particularly for young people.
Karnah’s rich Pahari and Gujjar-Bakarwal traditions, folk music, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and local hospitality further strengthen its appeal as a potential tourism destination. The promotion of homestays, local guide services and traditional products could help local communities benefit from tourism-related economic activities.
The development of tourism infrastructure, alongside improved connectivity and the preservation of the region’s natural environment, could play an important role in unlocking Karnah’s tourism potential. The proposed Dana-Budwan View Point/Gazebo represents a step in this direction, with the project expected to add to the area’s visitor facilities once implemented.
