Srinagar, Apr 27 (JKNS): A wanted criminal was killed in a police action after he allegedly opened fire on a naka party in the Miran Sahib area of Jammu late Sunday night, officials said.
Officials sources told news agency JKNS that acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team from Police Station Miran Sahib established a naka and intensified checking in the area to intercept the suspects.
During the operation, the accused, identified as Abhineet Singh, a member of the Nagi gang and a history-sheeter involved in over 13 FIRs including attempt to murder, rioting and arms smuggling, arrived on a motorcycle along with an associate.
When asked to stop, the duo allegedly tried to break the naka and fired upon the police team. In retaliation and self-defence, police fired back, after which both fled from the spot leaving behind their motorcycle under the cover of darkness.
Official sources said the police chased the accused and later found Abhineet Singh in an injured condition in a nearby canal, while his associate managed to escape. He was shifted to Government Medical College Jammu, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while a manhunt has been launched to trace the absconding associate. (JKNS)
