Srinagar, May 16 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief spokesperson and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq on Saturday accused the BJP of “enacting drama” over the liquor sale issue in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that only the National Conference government would take concrete steps to ban alcohol in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters, Sadiq, according to news agency JKNS, said the BJP was now protesting against liquor sale despite remaining silent when the policy was framed during the Lieutenant Governor’s rule in 2023.

“The BJP protested a lot, and it is good that they protested, but unfortunately when the policy was framed during Governor’s rule, they were nowhere to be seen,” Sadiq said.

He further stated that the National Conference government understands the sentiments of the people, particularly in Kashmir, and promised that the Omar Abdullah-led government would take action on the issue.

“I promise one thing — the National Conference will ban it and will do it very soon. If needed, we will do it during the upcoming autumn session,” he said.

Sadiq also took a dig at the BJP’s hunger strike call, saying they should first protest against those who introduced the policy during the LG administration.

Commenting on reports regarding Cabinet expansion, the NC spokesperson said it remains the prerogative of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and any decision in this regard will be taken by him.

He also responded to allegations of corruption levelled by opposition parties, particularly the PDP, saying the National Conference government does not tolerate corruption or irregularities.

“If anyone has any complaint against any minister or MLA, bring it before the leadership and immediate action will be taken. But no minister or MLA in our government is involved in corruption or malpractice,” Sadiq said. (JKNS)
